Solar S’mores

We learned about solar energy & created a "Solar Cooker" to make s’mores. I strive for hands -on & active engagement with my young students. Hands-on learning increases student engagement, motivation, and retention. This activity was so fun and yummy, too.

Apples, Apples, Apples

We are having a wonderful week tasting, investigating and experimenting with apples. We learned about the legend of Johnny Appleseed and celebrated his birthday. It was fun to pretend to be part of the "Appleseed" family and wear paper pots on our heads with our "Appleseed" names. We taste tested three different apples and voted on our favorite. We enjoyed applesauce and apple cider. We loved making apple prints and were suprised to discover “stars"inside of apples! Next week, we will begin observations of an apple in the process of decaying. We are developing skills related to asking questions, conducting experiments, drawing conclusions and sharing our findings. All while having so much fun along the way!  I am constantly amazed at how much my friends retain.  It's great to "BEE" in kindergarten!

International Dot Day

We had a wonderful time celebrating International Dot Day! We put on our engineering caps and designed structures using dots. I have awesome engineers in my class! My friends designed some amazing structures with Dot candy. “Just make a mark and see where it takes you”― Peter H. Reynolds, The Dot.

Volcano

My Busy Bees enjoyed creating our first chemical reaction in class. We read the story, My Mouth is a Volcano and became chemists creating a chemical reaction. We made a volcano and mixed substances to observe an eruption. Chemical reactions are always so much fun to create and fascinating for children to observe!

This week we explored dinosaurs and became paleontologist excavating "fossils". In addition, we created dinosaur fossils and composed an amazing song about what paleontologist do.

Pollination

We had an awesome week exploring plants and learning about the life cycle of bees. We investigated pollination through an activity using Cheetos as pollen. We planted "Busy Bee" sunflower seeds. We observed a sweet potato developing a root system and investigated how H20 travels up the stem of plants.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! With Kelley being my maiden name, St. Patrick's Day is one of my favorite celebrations during the school year. This year, created our own community called "Tater Town". We  had a feeling that mischievous little Leprechaun may try and visit, so we created traps to attempt to capture him. We faithfully plotted his travels from Ireland across the Atlantic Ocean through the Gulf of Mexico and up the mouth of the Mississippi River straight to our classroom at North Live Oak in Watson. That leprechaun was so sneaky and mischievous!  He avoided all of our traps. We were shocked to see how he tumbled over  chairs and scattered our things all over the room. He made such a mess, but we were very happy that he left us gold coins, and chocolate coins. Continuing our celebration, we made explored the 3 states of matter and made green ice cream floats. We had a great day!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

We had a wonderful day reading stories from Dr. Seuss and making green eggs.  Eighteen friends loved green eggs and two were not pleased with the taste and decided they should be waste.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Adventures in letter land - Q and U wedding

Adventures in letter land.
We learned that Q and U are always together.  So we decided they wanted to be together forever. We had a simple and fun wedding to help my friends remember Q and U will always be together!  The wedding cake flavor was voted on and we enjoyed it with punch.
